While adhesive manufacturers say you can tile straight onto new concrete or screed, we would strongly recommend the use of a primer to ensure there is a good “key” for the adhesive to take to. Eventually, this can lead to delamination where the tiles simply peel up!
Do I need to prime screed before tiling?
It is best to protect the screed fully until the flooring is applied using boarding. Before tiling we would recommend applying a primer to the prepared screed surface before application of the tile adhesive. Priming created an effective barrier and assists in making the surface more stable.
How long before you can tile on self Levelling compound?
It’s suitable for foot traffic in 30 minutes and ready to tile onto in 45 minutes. Sealed coverings such as vinyl can be laid on top of the surface just 90 minutes after application.

Can you lay porcelain tiles on screed?
Porcelain slabs are suitable for fixing on screed both for internal and external projects. If you are laying screed on top of an existing smooth or shiny floor, you may need to key the surface to ensure stability.
Why does screed fail?
Potential floor failures can occur if the screed is applied incorrectly and it ranges from cracks in the floor, to uneven and weak layers. At times, screed failure is also caused due to errors when laying underfloor heating (UFH), which is a popular accomplice for screed applications.
What goes on top screed?
In most cases the surface to be screeded will consist of 50 to 100mm-thick layers of insulation boards over a DPM (damp-proof membrane) on top of the floor structure. It’s important these sheets are stable when walked on and laid so they don’t rock about on uneven sub-floors.
Do you waterproof over screed?
The pros usually waterproof under the screed simply because of their timeframes. They need to get on with it and don’t want to be waiting for a screed to dry out. If your on a slab, you can screed and waterproof on top once all moisture has escaped (roughly 2/3 days depending on the weather.
Can I tile directly over self-leveling compound?

Can you tile on top of self-leveling compound?
Self-leveling concrete creates a highly smooth surface that is also high-strength. Self-leveling concrete can not only be used for leveling concrete, but can be laid on top of any non-flexible surface, such as ceramic tile, LVP, wood, or plywood.
How long after screed can you lay floor?
Most screeds recommend 24 – 48 hours. Some more modern screed floors will have a shorter walk on time, as little as 12 hours. Refer to the manufacturers guidelines. Heavier/normal traffic can be resumed 5-7 days after the screed floor is laid.
