A Rivet Nut Gun, or Rivnut® Gun, is a tool used to install a Rivnut®, or rivet nut fastener. The pulling mechanism inside the tool engages the internal threads of the fastener to exert a pull, which causes the rivet nut shank to expand/upset against the blindside of the material that it is being fastened.

What is a Nutsert?

A “Nutsert®”, a branded name for the generically referred to “rivet nut”, is a tubular shaped metal fastener with internal threads. When materials such as sheet metal, tubular structures and plastics are too thin to tap (typically less than 1/2 inch thick), a Nutsert® provides a thread for the parent material.

How strong is a Nutsert?

Nutserts are strong but they can lose their grip on the parent metal and just spin in circles if the bolt seizes to it. Off-roading is not significantly harder on the wiper motor than on-roading. The load comes from the wiping action – not from the driving surface.

Can I use a regular rivet gun for rivet nuts?

If you have a rivet gun that has the proper insert dies to accommodate the rivnuts then you can. Otherwise you will have to purchase a rivet gun that contains the rivnut inserts that you choose to use. Each rivnut requires a tool die set to utilize them.

Are Rivnuts permanent?

The fastener is inserted into a pre-drilled hole, and when the mandrel is applied, it forms a bulge on the blind side to form a seal. What makes rivet nuts different is that they are permanent, threaded nuts that are fixed in place to receive a threaded insert.

How do threaded inserts work?

Threaded inserts are typically used when the object in which a threaded fastener is being installed is made of a soft material. A simple solution is to use a threaded insert. The threaded insert is placed inside the object, after which the threaded fastener is driven into the insert.

How much weight will a Rivnut hold?

The cell holds up to 35 gallons. The fuel cell weighs roughly 225 pounds when full. I have been at some pretty crazy angles off road with fuel in the tank and have had zero issues.

How strong are Plusnuts?

In terms of strength, Plusnuts have a high “pull out strength” (1,215 pounds), and so offer a more secure attachment than simply screwing into the van walls (less than 100 pounds).

How do you pick a good Rivnut?

Most rivet nut tools come with multiple nose sizes and should fit the mandrel you need. When choosing the right tool, you should consider factors such as the work site, the types of materials you are working with, and—most important of all—ease of use and safety. Consider how you plan to use the rivet nuts.

Who invented the Rivnut?

The first rivet nut was created by BF Goodrich in the 1930s, and sold under the trademark RIVNUT®. It was first used to mount rubber de-icing boots to aircraft wings.

Can you use a bolt without a nut?

Screws and bolts look somewhat similar, since both have threads. However, bolts can also be screwed into a threaded hole in order to fasten something down without the need for a nut, like a valve cover bolt that fastens down the valve cover to the rest of a car’s engine.
